I come to capture the feeling of my surroundings. Not there for too long ... just long enough to note the colours; capture the essence of what the landscape is saying.

Later in the studio, I pull out the plein air sketch. It's a painting.. but it feels like a sketch to me. Small, simple, messy. It reminds me of what standing next to the field felt like.

I plan out my painting with charcoal markings.

Reworking the painting gives me an opportunity to correct and evaluate values. After many layers of pastel I finally decide it's time to walk away.
